2020/2021 Season Update

AYSA Families,

The recreational basketball league our AYSA teams participate in (North Texas Youth Basketball Association – NTYBA) made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming season. You can see the communication provided by the NTYBA Board below. After extensive discussions with the participating communities, it became clear that with the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on safety, access to gyms for practice and games, potential protocols required, etc., that we simply couldn’t facilitate our normal NTYBA season. The community representatives have agreed to continue to monitor the situation and determine if there is a possibility to hold a shortened season early in 2021 or potentially host community tournaments if facilities are available, but at this point the NTYBA season has been cancelled and there is no firm plan on how that league might move forward.

After exploring the surrounding communities there are limited options for basketball as we enter the winter season. Here are the options I see available to all:

-        The Fieldhouse in Grapevine is planning to host their winter session. To participate you can register as an individual or as a team. Registration will be limited and closes on November 1st

-        Other leagues that normally have seasons that should be monitored include the YMCA in Flower Mound, North Texas Basketball League (hosted by Guyer), Neighborhood Sports, and the Southlake Youth Sports league, but all are currently in flux due to COVID-19

-        Tournament Play. For coaches who want to put together a team you can also register to play in tournaments. The level of competition at these tournaments will vary from average skill level to advanced skill level. There are several websites you can go to with organizations that host tournaments throughout the year:

o   PrimeTime:

o   Opportunity for Youth:

o   Champions of Sports:

o   RBC Tournaments:

o   North Texas Basketball League:

At this time, we cannot guarantee that AYSA will be given access to AISD facilities to allow teams to practice. If you find a league to participate, they typically provide you with a practice slot. If you do register for a league or plan to play tournaments, you should email [email protected] and we can keep you informed about access to facilities for practice and discuss any assistance you may need with uniforms.

Dear NTYBA Family. As you are all too aware, North Texas schools are one of the fronts of COVID-19, and they continue to struggle through recovery from its effects. Our community schools are the backbone to the execution of NTYBA Basketball operations, for without our gymnasiums, we are unable to hold practices or games. Several of our communities have recently dealt with disruptive issues; they have had to close whole schools, miss scheduled Fall Sports games, and carry on facility logistics and cleaning that are too cumbersome to continue in any long-term fashion.

Any one of these by itself threatens the continuation of the 2020-2021 NTYBA season. But the potential loss of gymnasiums, the understandable reticence of each community’s school board, and the priority we place on the safety and well-being of our communities has resulted in the NTYBA Board’s decision to cancel the 2020-2021 season that usually plays from December to February.

We understand and support the role that athletics plays in the development and well-being of our children. It is a wonderful venue to teach leadership, teamwork, responsibility, accountability to others, and individual growth. Our Board will continue to monitor the schools’ ability to open safely, and be supportive of any safe opportunity to play the game we love, including tournament play and the opportunities forged from those neighboring leagues that might have different circumstances.

As always, we wish your families, communities, and athletes all the best until we resume operations in the 2021-2022 NTYBA Season.
